Western Auction Features Civil War Arms and Major Pre-Columbian Artifacts Collection
New Braunfels, TX (PRWEB) February 2, 2008 -- A major collection of pre-Columbian artifacts containing Mayan and Aztec pottery and figurines from a life-long collection of a prominent Texas collector will be auctioned near San Antonio, Texas, on February 9 and 10. Another key element of the sale is a large antique firearm collection, which includes a documented Colt Pocket Model 1849 taken off a Confederate spy during the Civil War who was later pardoned by Abraham Lincoln.
Of the thousands of rare pre-Columbian artifacts up for auction, many were personally excavated by the collector, and include effigies as large as 2-3'. The key item in the Civil War collection is a Colt Pocket Model 1849 that was removed from a captured Confederate spy in 1863, along with copies from the National Archives of decoded messages, court records, trial transcript and a pardon letter by Abraham Lincoln.
The auction will also present other major antique firearms plus important western collectibles including Texas Ranger items and Indian artifacts. "This western sale is exceptional in that it is offering a wide range of important historical artifacts," said Robb Burley, of Burley Auction Gallery in New Braunfels, Texas, where the sale is being held. "The pre-Columbian collection and important firearms have certainly created a lot of interest amongst serious collectors."
Within the western artifacts collection are a gavel formerly belonging to the famous Judge Roy Bean made of Thornwood and Long Leaf Pine, saloon and gambling items, Frank Hamer, Bonnie & Clyde items, Winchester calendars and a pair of authentic 1800's Winchester bullet boards, and trick shooter Ad Topperwein presentation gun and shootouts, a King Ranch saddle and the highly collectible McChesney and Kelly Bros. spurs. Additional major items in that portion of the collection is an engraved Smith & Wesson revolver and Federal Marshal badge presented to Texas Ranger Clint Peoples by President Reagan plus his portrait that hung in the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco.
Indian artifacts include arrow heads, peace medals, hand-woven Indian baskets such as an Apache figural basket, a Navajo wedding basket and an Apache gambling tray, Acoma and Pueblo Indian pieces, Navajo rugs and Indian pottery from the mid to late 1800's.
The large antique firearm collection consists of over 100 items such as period engraved Colt single actions, Colt single action Army, also some engraved, Colt Lightning rifles, and of considerable note, all four styles of Winchester model 1866 Yellow Boy rifles, Winchester 1873's, 1886, 1892's, muskets, a Ballard rifle, Marlin lever actions and Sharps, Evans and Spencer carbines. The Civil War gun collection includes rifles plus Colt and Remington revolvers.
Other artifacts and collectible items in the sale are swords, Bowie knives, country store advertising and displays, early American antiques, coin op, slot machines, collection of antique toys, cast iron mechanical banks, black Americana, Coca Cola coolers and trays, vintage Pearl and Lone Star Beer neon signs, a saloon bar and back bar, an Oak roll top desk and a Wurlitzer juke box.
The auction is being held in New Braunfels, Texas, at the Burley Auction Gallery, 134 Deborah Drive, Saturday February 9 starting at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, February 10th at 12:00 noon. The preview is Friday, February 8 at 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at auction start.
